This study investigates syntactic structures and their contribution to the construction of textual meaning within a functional–textual framework. It approaches grammar as a dynamic system for organizing meaning rather than a set of prescriptive morpho-syntactic rules. The research outlines the concepts of syntactic structure and textual meaning, and clarifies the distinction between traditional structural grammar and functional–textual grammar. It then examines key syntactic configurations—predicational, descriptive, cohesive, and transformational—and demonstrates how these structures shape textual meaning, ensure coherence, and guide interpretation within context. The study further highlights the functional orientation of grammar, showing how syntactic structure operates as an instrument for fulfilling semantic and communicative purposes that connect textual components and facilitate the flow of ideas. It concludes that syntactic structures serve as functional frameworks for meaning-making and textual cohesion, and that the functional–textual approach offers an effective analytical model for understanding the interplay between form and meaning in Arabic discourse. Such an approach, the study argues, provides researchers with a valuable methodological tool for analysing diverse texts and interpreting their communicative functions.
