A Sociolinguistic Analysis of Social Status in Hosseini’s The Kite Runner

Abstract

The present study investigates social status in Khaled Hosseini’s novel the Kite Runner from a sociolinguistic perspective. Labov model of narrative analysis is used for the analysis of the data of single speaker’s narrative and Goldwin ‘s story structure framework for the analysis of the interactive aspect of the data. This study aims at the followings: 1) investigating the selected texts of the novel according to Abstract, orientation, complicating action, resolution, evaluation, and coda.  2) Scrutinizing story preface, story solicit, preliminary to the story, story action, story climax and story appreciation in selected texts of the novel. The study is based on the following procedures: 1- Presenting a theoretical background of Sociolinguistics, the notion of social statues, and Khaled Husseini’s Kite Runner. 2- Analyzing the selected data according to the eclectic model adopted for the analysis in this study.
